Park(ing) Day

The 16th was Park(ing) day! The idea behind this activity is to transform a city parking space to park for a day. The message is not just for saving the nature, it is also a call for more breathing space in the city. For us students at Art & Technology it was a school project as well and loooooots of fun!!! We moved it to 17th of September, Saturday, hoping to get more attention from the people of Aalborg.

So Saturday morning 9 groups of students occupied 9 parking lots and started doing their thing.

In my group we covered an old car with grass and leafs and let it disappear.

A little bird with movement sensor was singing for us every time we walk by :)

Our "give aways" basket full of little packages with seeds.

A Wishing tree grew next to us. Just write what you wish for in your city on one of the leafs ;)

Coffee and hot chocolate are served in our neighbour's park(ing) garden

Summer Mood

Back in Bulgaria heat is killing me! They say it's 36-37C, but I don't believe that, it must be at least 40! Even the air is burning! But I shall not complain, as I was praying for this heat whole year in cool windy Denmark and I have only a month to accumulate as much heat as possible for the next northern year!

It's really hard to be active or creative when you hardly breath, and even though I do not suffer from lack of inspiration, it takes me a lot of effort to do sth, as there's no air conditioner in my room and the computer gives me some extra heat, so yeah for minimalism! I made a little illustration yesterday to honor my all times favorite fruit - the watermelon ( a real one, no like those I've tried in DK). There's simply nothing comparable to cold juicy watermelon in a hot day! Niamh! Well I'd better go to get some now ;)

Silly and curious

Last few days I've completely lost track on time, I don't know anymore if it is night or day, or which date is it and when I look at my clock I need some time to get if it is 7 (in the morning) or 17 (= 5 pm)! This happened this morning, I woke up, looked at the clock and was pissed, coz I thought it's 17:00 and I have to be out at 16:00 :D Light outside doesn't help much as now in Denmark is almost endless day, it's getting dark only for a while between 23:00 and 3:00, which is pretty awesome I must say! All this crazy time I was freackin' creative! I'm now in the logo business, producing logos for sites, I have to post some some day soon. I'm also trying to keep up with my self drawing lessons, I have to finish that sketch book before the end of the summer!

BUT! What I actually had to share is my new "masterpiece" :))!

Cute and silly as hell, it was entertaining me between the logos. I had tones of fun with it and I'm pretty happy with the result! It must have taken like 8 hours and I've painted it in SAI, I start loving that program! I've never went so deep in details or at least never felt it before. Background is lame, but I just had no idea what to put there, that may change later if I come up with sth.

I was regularly taking screenshots coz my mother was curious about the process, so I've later made wip animation, coz they're fun!

And at the end some little close-ups, coz for a first time I'm not too shy to let ppl take closer look at my stuff.

YAY for improvement and onward to new achievements ;))

The day after we went to the seaside was still sunny and warm. In the morning I had to go to school to print some stuff for my exam and on the way back I've enjoyed cycling in the sun so much that I just couldn't go back to my room and sit in front of the computer again. So I grabbed my camera, jumped on the bike and took the road to wherever. I didn't follow any sign or had any idea of where I'm going, just cycled where I felt like. It's such a great feeling to just take any direction and don't care where it goes, just be free to take any turn, any path, running away from places you know. I've actually found quite nice picnic place near some hills and a very nice church, nothing really great and fascinating, but well it was already 5 o'clock when I left and even though the days are now endless it started getting colder after 2-3 hours. So here are few pics from my little "trip" :)

A friend asked me what I wanted to say with those pics, so I really wondered for a while "what I want to say with those pics?" and the answer is NOTHING! Just wanted to show things I liked and tried to capture the way they made me feel, just wanted to find new view to the everyday boring stuff around and just enjoyed myself. That's all! No deep meanings and life's wisdom lessons :) Although I believe that every picture keeps hundreds of stories and everyone is free to find their own ;)

To the seaside

Wednesday (the 23rd) was really nice day here in Aalborg (19-22°, fewer clouds and milder cool wind) and because such miracles happen once in a lifetime in our latitudes we decided to take a little trip to the seaside, which luckily is all around! I had no idea where we're going, but later I made a little research based on a picture of a sign I took, so we must have been somewhere where the red sign on the map shows:

When we arrived first thing we saw were the huge almost mountain-like dunes. Certainly the highest I've ever saw! So we just took off our shoes and started climbing. The landscape made me think more of a desert than about the North sea coast. From the top of the dune you see a high tower, which as I later found out is an old lighthouse, buried in the sands. They say that in few years it will disappear completely.

The wind on the top was strong enough to blow away your mind! My eyes were filled with sand but I worried more that same happened to my camera. I remembered to have read somewhere that when going to such a place you should put the camera in a plastic bag or sth to protect it from the sand, but I guess some things you never learn until your own bad experience teaches you. Just hope he'll be ok!

Wanted to make sth gloomy and depressive with that picture, but after all it stays like this.

It wasn't easy to reach the beach, everywhere the dunes' slopes were so steep, that you cannot just walk down. On the pictures they even look like rocks, but it's actually all sand.

A warmer colored version of the pic up, couldn't decide how I like it more, I love the colors here, but on the other hand cooler hues give a better idea of my actual perception of the place.

No comment! I guess I will never understand those northerners :)

I discovered that I actually enjoy northern beaches much more than ours back in Bulgaria. The fact that ours are suitable for a massive summer tourism actually ruins them and takes a lot from their beauty. First of all I don't enjoy beach activities (sun bathing, swimming etc.), second I hate the crowds on our beach, all the umbrellas, sun beds, beach bars, tourist boats, hotels and of course the tones of garbage the tourists leave behind them. Here I get a completely different feeling - I like how lonely unspoiled quite and cold those beaches are. They make me feel as if I'm at the end of the world (which is kinda truth, hi hi) and inspire me so much!

Pictures actually fail to show how high the dunes were in fact and how epic and majestic the view from up there was! It was incredible to see the horizon from there - the line was bended and you could see that the earth is round indeed! I've never quite believed that :))

On the way back we took a route through some bushes, prickly grasses and nettles. Really great concerning our bare feet :)) It was some kind of rough-close-to-the-nature-wild-survival-discovery-chanel experience!

I didn't feel as if we walked a lot and I was so surprised to see our landmark- the old lighthouse so far away!

It's the middle of the exam time! Last 2-3 weeks were soooo busy that I didn't had the time to check internet too much and I've missed to introduce the 2 major events that were going on - the Aalborg carnival 2010 where I've worked as a guide *proud* and the Innovative typography project + exhibition we made at school. Both were fun and didn't left me much time to sleep. I may put some pics later on.

What I wanted to say now was that if you have lack of inspiration you just have to wait untill the exam time. I have one more day to finish tones of stuff, but instead I decided to try out a new painting program - Paint tool SAI. So to relax from project I was messing around in it for a while and this came out:

It should be finished once I hand in my project *cannot wait*. The program seems cool by the way, it just thinks a bit differently from PS which still confuses me, but it's so much faster that I will definitely forgive some little weirdness. Now back to writing synopsis ... :C

I saw some really beautiful minimalistic photography today and I just had to do something, so I went back to my old forgotten folders and dig up some ancient photos from one of my first "study" sessions with the new (back than) camera. Those are made 2 years ago near the place where I live in Bulgaria. I just played around a bit with the colors and composition in PS.

Little fast something I made yesterday to honor today - 24th of May the day of the Bulgarian literature and culture. For those of you who cannot read it (like me) it says:

The cyrillic alphabet have been developped in the end of the 9th century at the Preslav Literary School in the First Bulgarian Empire.

The cirilic alphabet is used in the Slavic national languages of Belarusian, Bulgarian, Russian, Rusyn, Serbian, Macedonian, Montenegrin and Ukrainian, and in the non-Slavic languages of Moldovan, Kazakh, Uzbek, Kyrgyz, Tajik, Tuvan, and Mongolian. It also was used in past languages of Eastern Europe, the Caucasus, and Siberia.

Since the accession of Bulgaria to the European Union on 1 January 2007, Cyrillic became the third official alphabet of the European Union."

Since I went abroad and lived for some time among foreigners I found out there were many things about my country people not just don't know, but know wrong. They presume that Russia has been our Prometheus and gave us everything we have and we're just some copy- paste of it! Well that's not quite so!

I hate hearing all the time "Oh you use those weird letters, just like the Russians! You get it from them, right!"- NO WE DID NOT! In the times when the cyrilic script was developed in Bulgaria Russia didn't even existed!

Wow! I almost forgot how to write here he he! So last week I had a study trip to Copenhagen and I had the mission to spot a trend there :? How do you do this in 4 days? Anyways, some pics to note my lil trip ...

The very looooong magical and exciting bridge to the island where CPH lies (not the bridge to Sweden, this one is a bit shorter and less magical). At the end of the bridge you pay about 300 dkk for the pleasure ;)

First day of the trip we took a boat trip along the canals. It was certainly cool if the freezing wind doesn't count! So this on the pic is where like century ago (?) was the bitches & drunk sailors place. Really cool! We honored the place by drinking vodka by the canal and we managed not to fall down in the water!

That's right! Little mermaid is now on the world Expo in Shanghai :( I'm sure she's got lots of fun there! I would like to go see her there!

Some royal bridge! (Love how the colors turned out on this one) CPH is full of royalness, unfortunately we didn't meet any danish prince on a white horse ;(

View from our window in Dan hostel, which sucks ... not the view ... :) The viewer may be confused by the colors on the pic, yes this day there was a piece of sun, but it was certainly not that warm and shiny as it might seem, that's the wonder of Photoshop ;)

Some stuff from the Design Center, which was a huge disappointment. Well there was cool stuff but they had only 4 rooms and not much things inside, I expected a really huge building with lots and lots of stuff, but NO!

Well there's plenty of places we couldn't visit and stuff we didn't see. We were busy with company visits too. Companies were cool except for the fact that we didn't get any presents (pens, note books, calendars etc.) Only thing we got was a glass of water :C One day when students come to my company I won't let them go empty handed, they came for this after all, not to listen to my "blah-blah" ;))

Unfortunately I have no pics from the coolest place ever - Cristiania, coz taking pics there is forbidden and it's not the kind of place where I would be brave enough to neglect rules.

And after all that's what came out from my trend spotting! I'm not really sure if it makes any sense, but it's the only thing I could come up with :)

Sort of emotional, quite spontaneous and messed all over the place thing. I still like the idea and the feeling, hope one day I'll be good enough to redo all the "good ideas"!

This morning I had to fly to Alicante, Spain for a week of warmth and fun with friends, but few days ago some Icelandic volcano had to erupt and flights all over Europe were canceled due to the dust cloud, but I guess everyone knows this. Ehhhh! Did that influence the pic in some way? Maybe, but not that much.

The WIP slideshow is made for fun and it shows pretty good how you should NOT color your pic ;)

Yesterday I drew myself again! It's always cool to practice on yourself - it's free, always available and no one will be angry if you mess them up :D, which also reminds me that I need to get a mirror so badly! Recently I'm practicing a lot, I'm reading and drawing every free minute I have and this time I consider myself serious as I draw boring but useful stuff. Buuuuut let's go back to the point! I decided to make a little time line of all self portraits I ever drew and I have on my laptop here in DK. So let's start:

April 2008

I had that one in digital colors, colored with the mouse back in those old times, but the file disappeared mysteriously! I delete things very rare, I'm such a junk keeper, so I have no idea where it's gone, anyway the sketch speaks for itself and it tells me - laugh in my face - ha ha ha!

September 2008

Me as a Disney princess or something ha ha! Still no tablet involved! But I kinda still like this one for some reason.

February 2009

I've cropped that from a meaningless illustration I made for a practice. In the end of January'09 I've bought my tablet but I've used it mainly for the sketch and the background, the pen tool + mouse combination was still very strong habit.

April doesn't seem to be very lucky mount for my drawing, hah! I found that in my junk folder! So it stayed just a digital sketch forever!

I've always loved that one! I still do, despite the mistakes I see! Done for an Id pic on dA. I discovered my love for this shade of blue and I replaced my black eyes and hair with blue for more illustrative look. I still love that! I also have 2 blouses similar to the one I drew, I love them sooo much! I only have positive associations with that one and still consider it a successful one - it's still my profile pic and I still love it :) I even drew portraits in that style for few friends who liked it!

I've joined the Dark side! Buhaha! Again cropped from a larger unfinished illustration, made to show how fed up I was with my old life - 3rd season working in a hotel, just finished my tourism studies and bound to deal with incredibly stupid and inefficient system - that was my inner self! I have to finish that one it was fun to draw it! Drawn during my night shifts on the reception by the way.

Calm and happy, being finally where I've always belonged - on my way to a creative career, second semester graphic design student, hehe. That have never been meant to be finished, it was just a 10 min drawing for a little comic thing concerning personal affairs, he he.

Ta daaa! The one from yesterday! Well I never meant to go so far and make it look realistic, I'm not a big fan of realism, so that's why I didn't make it too smooth and kept going with that texture brush. I wanted to make it illustrative and blue hairish again, but I end up here! To be honest I feel like I cheated a bit bcs at some point I took the reference picture, put it on top and made little marks where I should move eyes, nose and mouth, but that's all, It's not an overpaint I swear! But anyway I'll try to not do that anymore, coz it doesn't make me feel satisfied with myself. There are still things to be touched, but pffff that's for now! Done in about 5 hours on only one layer (except the bg layer and the sketch)! I never was brave enough to draw on one layer and even though I cheated it was great practice! Yeah!

I sketched that one to entertain myself while sketching logos for the badminton club. Now I decided to color it! I went for the logo colors, to make it part of the visual identity :))

When the bulgarian khan Asparuch went to war he promissed his wife he'll send her a white dove with a white string binded to his leg if they win the battle. The Bulgarians won indeed, so the khan sended the promissed message. But when the troops reached home they found the people in grief as they didn't receive the white dove, so all thought the battle is lost. But than the white dove appeared. It was wonded by an arrow, so it couldn't reach them on time but despite the wound it made it. The white string binded on his leg became half red from the blood, the khan took that string and binded it on his hand, he ordered everyone to do so and to remember and celebrate that day of joy and happyness. It was first of march. So from that day on on every 1st of march the Bulgarians bind white and red string to their arms for health, hope and joy.

That is one of many versions of the legend I've heard, but that was the one to inspire me for the illustration. In fact that's pretty weird illustration for 1st of march, but maybe I was influenced by that gloomy Aalborg winter we have had here!

Anyway I hope you enjoy my interpretation!

A lovely view from my window

They said there was no real winter in Denmark ... no snow, no minus degree temperatures (and no earthquakes by the way :D), but my first Danish winter actually turns out to be the first real winter in my life! Of course I've seen snow, even snow which stays about a mounts, even snow in April, but I've never ever experienced snow which lasts 3 mounts by now and a new one is falling every 2 weeks! It all started in the beginning of December and the snow didn't melt yet! Last 4-5 days is snowing all the time! Well I have my new warm and nice room, my warm clothes, so I really don't mind it all! It's so beautiful and magical, that i secretly wish it lasts longer, although I love heat.

Well they said there's no real summer in Denmark too, we'll check it out in few mounts :)) Hmmm is there something real in Denmark?

I was going to school, trying to work on project, doing stuff for myself, moving to new room, cleaning around, eating and sleeping like 2 hours in between! What I wanted to say is I'll really enjoy sleeping in my new shiny room for the next 15 hours :D

Have you ever wondered what does Google know about you? For me the thought of googling my name have always been kinda creepy, maybe because of my paranoia he he. Anyway I did it and what did I discover? Few curious things:

First of all Google doesn't know my name so well so yeah! I can sleep peacefully tonight!

Second - there is a person with the exact same name like me (at least the first and the last ones), who lives in the same city like me and has been attending the same school like me, but I never met her! Interesting! And there is another person with the same name who is engineer haha!

Third - well that was expected - a published something like travel notes, something like essay about my first living abroad as an Erasmus student in Netherlands.

Fourth - and that was the weirdest - in a forum I found published a really ancient poem of mine (really shity one) and it certainly wasn't published there by me! Years ago I was really publishing some stuff in a literature site, but nowhere else. The person who put it there was good enough to write my name, respecting my copyrights, mentioning even my nickname in that literature site, so everything's fine with that! It just seems I had fans without even knowing about that haha! So to all my anonymous fans - thank you very much for appreciation guys, but I really wouldn't mind if you come out of the unknowness and say hi ;)

Ok, I did that! I gave to the blog design my own personal touch! It took me last 2 nights! But I'm pretty proud of myself as I managed to do this without any knowledge about html and css or web-design! (I always knew I was a genius!) The header still bothers me a bit, coz it's too boring, but I'm still working on it, for now I just needed to get how it works, once I get it, I'll be unstoppable!

So why am I starting a blog? Why not??? My idea is to share here my drawings, photography and designs and if somebody finds it interesting that will be great!!!

Ok, too much words for a start. What's a blog without a pictures? Here's the one which inspired me for the color scheme choice.
